If your home-base is not too far away then this is a nice day-trip... on the order of a $100 hamburger run.
Only about 60NM north of Memphis TN on the banks of the Mississippi, Caruthersville (M05) has a well-kept
4000 x 75 asphalt strip with 100LL available.
There is a golf course just a short walk across the grass from the tie-down area. (There is also a psychological
counseling practice in a building about 15 feet from the tie-downs.... I guess for those of use who occasionally
need to deal with guilt over a less-than-textbook landing?)
If you're in the mood for a leisurly walk, or have your folding bikes stowed in the back you can head over to
the river and try your luck at the Casino Aztar.... it's about a 10 minute easy bike ride over to the casino.
There are a few small restaurants in town but if you're there on a Sunday your best bet for food is going to
be Corky's BBQ in the entrance building before crossing the gang-plank to the floating casino.
The Casino Aztar doesn't compare to the flashier casinos only 95NM South-West in Tunica, but if you're
going to fly into Tunica you're going to end up having to rent a car or pay much more than the car-rental
fee for a cab to any of the casinos ( we can't figure out why none of the Tunica casinos have thought to
provide an on-call shuttle service to and from the Tunica airport - the airport is not-at-all convenient to the
casinos and lack of free or easy transportation keeps it off our list of potential day-trips ).
On the way there or back, spend some low and slow time over the Big Muddy.... There's always lots of commercial
river traffic to watch and usually some interesting wildlife along the way.
